Guest Speaker: Chris McCabe, Software Developer at The Péarlaí Group and Area Director for Toastmasters International

Chris McCabe has worked in web and software development roles for almost a decade.  He’s currently employed as a software developer at The Péarlaí Group who provide real-time tracking solutions for shopping centre managers.  When he’s not engrossed in code, Chris plays an active role in the local business community, organising evening meet-ups for entrepreneurs and supporting individuals to build confidence and conquer the fear of public speaking.

Chris has been a member of Toastmasters International for 7 years and has completed a number of education programmes designed to enable participants to develop public speaking and leadership skills in a fun and safe environment.  He has held numerous committee positions within Newry Speakers Club and is now an Area Director tasked with providing operational support to the leadership teams of clubs in the Belfast, Lisburn, Newry, Dundalk and Drogheda areas.  Chris is also the founding President of the recently formed Banbridge Speakers Club which recently had its first meeting in September.

In his presentation Chris will share his story about why he joined toastmasters and what he has gained from the experience.  He will also present some tips to enable participants to identify techniques they can apply to improve their own public speaking skills.

Member Speaker: Suzanne Murdock, Director of The Hub Newry

Suzanne is the cofounder and director of The Hub Newry, a coworking network with 3 spaces in Newry city. She is also a founding member of “The Irish Coworking Assembly”. Suzanne is responsible for all things operational, community driven and the day to day running of the fantastic coworking network she’s created. She’s also inspired and obsessed by evolving coworking models, practices and communities; social innovation; collaborative working environments and supporting and connecting people.

With the experience of having worked within a number of different business models including corporate banking, SME’s and micro business / self-employment, Suzanne had to transfer, adapt and broaden her skill sets to succeed. Throughout these transitions it was clear that there is often no obvious support network, especially for the self-employed and for those in micro businesses.

Support to Suzanne goes beyond just the bricks and mortar, and developing the “career”, it’s about identifying those skills that make you happy, building on them, adapting when you need to and growing as a person. Mentoring and supporting new businesses, encouraging innovative and creative business ideas through brainstorming and workshops can all help to make the magic happen! Assisting in building support networks, client bases, contacts and suggesting strategies can help transform businesses.

Suzanne is also involved in consulting on collaborative working techniques, designing collaborative environments and introducing innovation into the workplace. She consults on the remit of how to get the best out of small cluster of industries working closely together e.g. media / building industries.

Community Enterprise and Social Innovation is also very important to her. She’s a mentor for a Young Enterprise Programme which helps support new business ideas from 9 year olds upwards. For the last 3 years she’s been on the judging panel of Young Enterprise NI’s “Company Programme”. One of the winning teams went on to win the all-Ireland and UK finals, and was runner up in the European finals with their amazing product!

Suzanne will be giving a tour of The Hub’s new space in Margaret St, Newry and will give a presentation sharing the benefits of coworking, its beginnings and the evolution of space and place with regards to the trends in working these days.
